These creatures are fascinating to watch. I remember a few years back I rented a jon boat to explore a little area in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge for some photography. As I recall the conditions and light was not best, but what I did experience were these huge gators everywhere I looked. All along the banks and in the water’s edge. While they appeared non threatening, I recall hoping that I did not have some accident which had me fall into the water. The gators all seemed to be uninterested in my presence. I kept my distance nonetheless.

Yes, it best to keep your distance with these guys. I always use a telephoto lens to get close up. They are quick swimmers moving at up to 20 mph as well as fast on land.
